98% Chimp!

I absolutely LOVED this project!!  So did the kiddos :)

What a great way to see how closely related to chimpanzees we really are.

We started with these 2 prints.  An adult chimpanzee hand and foot print.

I'm sure you can guess what's next!!

Chimps have feelings too :) :(

During one of our chimpanzee circle time discussions, we learned that another way chimpanzees are like us is that they have emotions like us.  I love "accidentally" teaching the kids new vocabulary words in my lesson plans!  Emotions?  What is that word?!  Well, they are our feelings.  How can we feel?  Sad, happy, angry, scared, lonely and nervous were some of the feelings the kiddos shouted out.

I used these sheets to help them find the missing words.  Saying the words out-loud, listening to the sounds the word makes.  Now making a guess as to which word was the correct word.  It's all apart of "decoding."  A major influence on the beginnings of reading.

The kids cut out each word.  The only word they really already knew was sad.  Now it was time to decode.

Playful.  It starts with the /p/ sound.  That's P!   Now let's find the word that starts with the letter P!

This is just one of many decoding steps we will be working on for the rest of the year.

Grass Man Can

We helped celebrate Earth Day on Monday by planting grass seeds into recycled cans!

Why would we grow grass seed??  Look through the pictures and you'll see!

To make grass man cans!  That's why!

We cut out pieces of felt and Ms.Kristy hot glued them on our cans.  When the grass grows....our grass man can will have some pretty cool hair!!

Each day we check on them and water them.  We can't wait for our "hair" to grow!

Happy Earth Day!

On friday we did a cool Earth Day art activity!

We started with coffee filters...

Then, using washable blue and green markers, we colored the coffee filters.

After we finished coloring the whole filter, we used a spray bottle to spray water on the filter.

The colors blend so beautifully on coffee filters because they are much thinner than regular paper!

Layers of the Rainforest

The kids really took their time with their rainforest art!

When we were finished I turned this into a writing center and had them label each layer.

Ask your child about the layers- they are so proud that they know them (and so am I!!)

Going Bananas for Math!

Chimpanzees love bananas and so do we!  We also love practicing addition!

In a math center this week we cut yellow paper into bananas (well...they semi resemble bananas!!).

We then counted the number needed and glued them on our empty boxes.  We counted them all together to find our total and wrote the answer.
